Dog Training basics

When it comes to training your dog, there are some basic universal commands that all dog trainers teach as the fundamentals of obedience training. Below is a list of these commands and a description and techniques for each.

Dog Training Command: Come

Come is perhaps the easiest command to teach your puppy and can be used for different situations and for fun and games. You will probably even teach this command without even realizing it when you train your dog to come at feeding time.

This is probably the most important command and should be taught first and should be practiced until it is automatic.

To begin, fasten a long lightweight nylon line to your dog’s collar. Allow him to wander away from you a little distance. Then, with love and encouragement, drop down on one knee and with open arms say your dog’s name and then tell them to come.

If your dog does not respond, then give the line a tug, repeating the command.

Once your pet does respond, praise the animal and give them a small treat. It is a good idea to repeat this exercise often and when the dog is not paying attention

Dog Training Command: Sit

The best way to execute this command is to keep your puppy at your left side and in a calm voice, state the dogs name and say, “Sit.” Once he recognizes that you are making a command, push down on his rear. Always wait a few seconds after the command is given before you push down to let the dog realize that the command goes with the action.

After you have push his butt down, offer the pup a treat at eye level in front of his face so that he realize that he has to stay sitting.

Treats are not the only reward. Praise and petting should be given in abundance, more than treats or else you might end up with an overweight dog. You might need to practice sitting for awhile before you pet makes the connection. Don’t expect miracles on the first try.

Some words of advice:

Please don’t expect too much of a puppy. Please teach only one new command at a time that way you don’t confuse your new pet. Puppies have short term memories so patience is always the best for training new puppies. Also, remember that every dog has its own personality and intelligence, so please don’t expect the same results for each dog you do train.

Dog Trainiing in the Inland Empire

Information was provided from their website.

Golden State K-9 Dog Training Academy is a facility that is passionate about their dog training and breeding programs. To them, the teaching of dogs is thier way of life. The owner, Peter Medina, has been breeding and training German Shepherds for over twenty years. On his website, he states that he has trained with and been mentored by some of the best dog trainers and animal behaviorists in the world. The knowledge that he learned has garnered him great success over the years. He trains dogs for Schutzhund and regularly exhibits these dogs at local, regional, and national competitions.

While they train various dog breeds, Medina promotes and advocates the German Shepherd dog as great animal with execptional working ability as a guard dog, watch dog or police K-9 unit.

They have a three acre facility with state of the art equipment for all forms of dog training and obedience lessons. Their main focus is making sure their clients work hand in hand with their companion, but also offer full kennel and boarding facilities. The kennels are modern indoor/outdoor kennels and are secluded away from the training area to keep the dogs from getting stressed. they also have full outdoor kennels if this is preffered by the client.

Golden State k-9 Training Academy’s dog training philosphy is based primarily on the basic common sense approach of animal learning and behavior. They will train your dog the right behaviors and will use positive reinforcement techniques. They feel that dogs are best trained with this approach and have been known to have exceptional results. It is important to make each dog a willing participant in the learning procress and try to involve the owner as much possible as a dog trainer.

In the past, they have used these methods to train dogs that allegedly could not be trained. These dogs, once trained by Golden State, have gone on to become exemplary canine citizens. The best part about their dog training program, is the fact that they guarantee their methods to work and that the training will last the lifetime of the dog.

Dog Training Basics

All dogs will benefit from obedience training. No matter what the breed or size, having a clear consistent method of dog training is necessary for your pet. This is even more important if you have larger, more dominant breeds like Akitas or Tosa Inus.

You should always apply common sense when training your dog. Don’t ever train your puppy in a haphazard, off-again, on-again attitude. This will not helpful for your dog and can lead to development issues later in life. You should always have a clear plan in mind and stick to it.

If you are not familiar with dog training, it is always a good idea to get help from a professional trainer or to attend dog obedience classes. Never just send your dog of to an obedience school without having an involvement with the dog yourself. You will be living with your pet, not the trainer. While the dog might respond well with the professional that does not guarantee that he will listen to you.

If you want your pet to respond to you then you need to be the one to train him. Also, any family members that want an active role in the dog’s life they should also be involved in the training of the dog. If all adult members of the household are involved in dog training, they will learn to understand exactly what the dog’s moods and behaviors are and they will learn what to expect from him.

The truth is that dogs do not want to be trained. It is their nature to be leaders, not followers. So the trick is to training your dog is to make this experience as fun and enjoyable as possible. Your dog delights in having regular social interaction with the human members of its pack. If obedience training is a pleasant experience then the dog will not mind repeating the process in the future.

What is very important is giving the dog a chance to learn from these lessons. Never rush training your dog for he will learn at his own pace. It is best to just have patience and watch him carefully to see just what exercises are most agreeable to him and repeat them frequently. Adult dogs tend to have long memories, but puppies don’t so having firm, consistent training is the key to a healthy and well-behaved pet.

Dog Training: The Dog Squad

The Dog Squad is an in-home dog training service and personalized dog obedience school that helps Oakland, Berkeley and East Bay families solve all types of dog behavior problems, including dog aggression.

Our trainer-owners, Oakland-based dog trainers Steve Bettcher and Patrick Gibbons, have over 25 years of combined dog training experience in the Bay Area… and over 35 East Bay veterinarians refer their clients to them for in-home dog behavior training and problem solving.

Dog obedience problems often stem from a lack of communication, lack of clear boundary setting, and lack of consistent discipline when training your dog. We teach pet owners how to train their puppies and dogs using a humane approach to dog obedience training that teaches you how to communicate effectively with your pet, so that your dog understands clearly what you want and expect. We act as your coach, by working with your dog on and off-leash, and then showing you how to get the exact same results. Our obedience training produces dogs that listen better and respond to you even when distracted.

Many dog training schools and obedience classes only cover basic dog manners and obedience, and do not deal with specific problem dog behavior. Steve and Patrick work with all breeds of dogs, all canine temperaments, and all dog behavior problems.

The Dog Squad offers a variety of private in-home dog training programs and obedience classes using traditional and remote dog collar training for puppies and adult dogs. We also offer some dog board and train programs in the Oakland area. No dog problem is too challenging for us to help you solve. Because we travel from Oakland to your location we cover only Alameda and Contra Costa County for our in-home dog training programs. We do work with people from outside the area by special arrangement.

For more information visit their website.

Provided From their website:

When it comes to dog training, Oakland Dog Training Club has been teaching people how to train their dogs for over fifty years. They believe that both people and dogs are the happiest when their dog is a well-behaved family member who knows what is expected of him or herin the household. They have found that training integrates better into family life if an owner is the one who trains the dog, rather than having this done just by a professional dog trainer. Oakland Dog Training Club is not an exclusive places as both purebred and mixed breed dogs are welcome at all their obedience training classes.

Oakland Dog Training Club offers a complete dog training program divided into different levels. Your dog will learn to follow your commands, even with the distractions of other dogs and people. They can start with a kindergarden Puppy class or a Beginning class, depending on the age of your dog, and continue through Intermediate and Advanced (Off-Leash Control) classes. Many people even choose to continue their obedience dog training after the basics, and enter their dogs in obedience trials or prepare for Rally or Agility. They believe that every dog loves to have a job, and it is fun besides!

Classes to train your dog are held in their indoor training facility, which is fully matted with mirrors. They are located near Pt. Isabel dog park, close to the Albany/El Cerrito/Richmond border. For more info, visit their website.

Dog Training Blues

Remember, dog training begins when you understand how your own behavior and actions relate to the animal. Remember, almost any animal can be trained, but not every human. It is when we realize that it is our own habits that are not in synch with those of the animal that we can begin to change our behavior.

The biggest example is taking dogs for a walk. Most people do not set a regular steady schedule when it comes to walking their dog. Their job, family, friends, and lifestyle have their own demands and sometimes the pet gets forgotten about.

Oh, we’ll take a long walk tomorrow.

Pup, I’m just too tired right now. Maybe later.

Does this sound familiar?

Well, your dog has its own needs. Its own eternal clock that tells him all is right in his world. By not following routine, by not meeting the needs of your pet, you not only affect his health but also any obedience and training you have already provided. Then, when the dog doesn’t act right, you blame him, but it was not his fault.

It was yours.

So, if you want a healthy well-behaved dog, you need to ask yourself what kind of dog will meet your needs, will match your lifestyle, and pick a dog breed appropriate based on these factors and not on how cute it looks.

Dog Training: Doggie Manners

Information below has been provided from their website:

Some perfectly normal dog behaviors are things that we humans don’t like…

The goal of Doggie Manners is train your dog to do what you wants so he is easy to live with.

Good dog behavior is when:

Your dog:

Comes when called.

Walks nicely on a leash.

Interacts politely with people and dogs.

Poops in proper areas.

Barks appropriately.

Doggie Manners can accomplish thes things and much more in their Los Angeles dog training and puppy training classes and through private lessons.

Dog Training

Many dog trainers go into dog training because they were obedience competitors as they started out training their dogs to compete for obedience titles. At Doggie Manners they started training thier own dogs because they wanted them to be better behaved.

Their training clients want what they want, for their dogs to be better behaved. They frequently comment, “Your method of dog training makes sense to me, and it makes sense to my dog because he learns so fast.”

Many clients see dramatic improvements in their dog’s behavior during the first lesson, and many times within the first five minutes . If you need help training your dog in the Los Angeles area, give Doggie Manners a try.

For more info, visit their website.
